Attila the Hun quotes

Attila (about A.D. 406-453). In the fifth century, civilization had developed to a high degree in western Europe under the dominion of the Roman Empire. But in eastern Europe there were wandering, warlike tribes whom the Romans called barbarians. The Huns, one of the largest barbarian tribes, were led by Attila.

The Huns were not a united people. They lived in scattered groups, moving from place to place. The centre of Attila's kingdom was Hungary. From there he gathered the Huns together into a large army and conquered the tribes in the territory surrounding his. Eventually almost all of eastern Europe was under his control.

Threatening to attack the Roman Empire, he forced the emperor to pay him a yearly tribute to prevent attack. But he still looted towns on the edges of the empire. After several years of this uneasy relationship with Rome, Attila demanded the emperor's sister in marriage. He also required that a quarter of the empire be given to him as her inheritance. When the emperor refused, Attila stormed into the empire. But the Roman army forced him to retreat.

Two years later he invaded the empire again. He ravaged many cities before disease among his troops forced him to retreat once more. The following year he died, and without his strong leadership the Huns again became a scattered people.
