Pakistan information for kids - a location map of Pakistan

Pakistan is an Asian country that is divided into two parts. West Pakistan is separated from East Pakistan by about 1,000 miles of Indian territory. Pakistan has more Muslim people than any other country. The main languages of Pakistan are Urdu, Bengali and English. Pakistan was created in 1947 by uniting the mainly Muslim areas of northwestern and northeastern India. More than five-sixths of the country's land is in West Pakistan, which is largely mountains and semi-desert. But more than half of all Pakistanis live in the more fertile East Pakistan. The great River Indus flows southwards through West Pakistan into the Arabian Sea. The Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers flow through East Pakistan into the Bay of Bengal.

West Pakistan's dry climate ranges from extremely hot summer days on the plains to cold winter nights on high ground. East Pakistan has a high rainfall and is hot for most of the year. Up to 100 inches of rain fall each year in some places.

Most Pakistanis are farmers. Their chief crops are wheat and cotton in the west, and rice and jute, a fiber used for making sacks and rope, in the east.

Pakistan came into being in 1947, when most of India's Muslim people refused to live under Indian rule after independence. Quarrels over religion and frontiers continued, particularly in Kashmir, resulting in an Indian-Pakistan war in 1965. In 1970 East Pakistan suffered a devastating flood that killed more than 100,000 people and left many more homeless.
